New Year, new you: 5 things you can start today to refresh your life

Breaking into a new year is as terrifying as it is satisfying. You feel like a champion because you made it through one more, but you’re terrified because it’s another year and you have no idea what it holds. Maybe you’re feeling stationary – like nothing has changed in the past year and maybe it never will. Maybe you need to refresh your life.

Not everyone has the opportunity to pick up and press the reset button, but you always have the opportunity to give yourself a little refresh. Sometimes a refresh is more life-changing than we expect.

Pick a fantastical goal and work towards it

Look, you’re not going to become a Hollywood actress tomorrow, the head of the United Nations or the richest woman in the world tomorrow but you have to admit, it is fun to dream…

Dreaming and working towards fantastical, out-of-reach goals allows us to imagine, have fun and take a few risks we wouldn’t normally take. It allows us to feel free, refreshed and gives us a feeling that we are really working towards something. Sure, you could give yourself any old goal – but you’re going to be way more motivated when you’re passionate about something.

So make 2019 the year you go for it. Whatever it is.

Put yourself first

We are taught that it is basic human nature to think of others, and being nice and doing good is what really matters. And while I’m not about to debate that particular point, for many of us focusing on others means forgetting ourselves. You are important, in fact, you are the most important person in your life.

So this year should be the year where you come first — that doesn’t mean forgetting about others, and it doesn’t mean turning into a sociopath that will run over anyone in the way — it means that you listen to yourself. This is key if you want to refresh your life...

When you’re tired, you take a nap. When you’re frustrated you give yourself a break and when you need 24-hours of solace you make sure you get that opportunity. Because if you take care of yourself, you have a much better chance of taking care of others.

Remove unnecessary stress from your life

You know that boyfriend who always makes you feel like shit, or that boss that’s dead set on tearing you down? Yeah, they need to go. Pick up your phone right now and say hey Jake, it’s been a slice I’m out.

And start planning your departure from that deadbeat job. No, you’re not leaving tomorrow but you’re setting a plan. You’re going to take the time to figure out what you want, where you want it and how you’re going to get it. 2018 is your year.

Commit to rewarding yourself for your accomplishments

The first part of this is that you’re going to have to actually do things, set some goals, work towards them and achieve them. They don’t have to be crazy or unattainable but you do have to do some work.

The second part of this is that you’re going to give yourself a literal pat on the back for doing an awesome job – maybe that means giving yourself the weekend off to read a book, or taking yourself out to that new Zac Efron flick (top of my list!) – whatever that is, you get it because you’re going to work hard.

Refresh your life by stopping bad habits

If you want to refresh your life, you need to make some positive changes. Maybe that means drinking less, going to bed earlier, quitting smoking or not always having that extra piece of pizza. Whatever it is, treat yourself better by helping yourself make healthier choices. Take it from someone who quit smoking this fall – while I admit I’ve most definitely faltered, I feel amazing and lungs thank me for it every morning. You deserve to be and feel healthy, that means helping yourself get that way.

You don’t have to make a massive change to change your life, you’d be surprised how far the little things go. But you do deserve to have an amazing 2019 and you’re the only one who can guarantee it. So do yourself a little favour by giving yourself a quick refresh
